Semiotic combinations in Pan: A comparison of communication in a chimpanzee and two bonobos

چکیده
Communicative combinations of two bonobos (Pan paniscus) and a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) are compared. All three apes utilized ordering strategies for combining symbols (lexigrams) or a lexigram with a gesture to express semantic relations such as agent of action or object of action. Combinatorial strategies used by all three apes revealed commonalities with child language, spoken and signed, at the two-year-old level. However, many differences were also observed: e.g., combinations made up a much smaller proportion and single symbols a much larger proportion of ape production compared with child production at a similar age; and ape combinations rarely exceeded three semiotic elements. The commonalties and differences among three sibling species highlight candidate combinatorial capacities that may underlie the evolution of human

Ape gestures and language evolution.
The natural communication of apes may hold clues about language origins, especially because apes frequently gesture with limbs and hands, a mode of communication thought to have been the starting point of human language evolution. The present study aimed to contrast brachiomanual gestures with orofacial movements and vocalizations in the natural communication of our closest primate relatives, b...

Although data on nucleotide sequence variation in the human nuclear genome have begun to accumulate, little is known about genomic diversity in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus). A 10,154-base pair sequence on the chimpanzee X chromosome is reported, representing all major subspecies and bonobos. Comparison to humans shows the diversity of the chimpanzee sequences to be a...

Please cite this article in press as: Gruber, T., Behaviour (2010), doi:10.1016/j.anbehav.201 Chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, are themost sophisticated tool-users among all nonhumanprimates. From an evolutionary perspective, it is therefore puzzling that the tool use behaviour of their closest living primate relative, the bonobo, Pan paniscus, has been described as particularly poor. However, onl...
متن کاملPrecursors of morality in the use of the symbols ‘‘good” and ‘‘bad” in two bonobos (Pan paniscus) and a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
Morality is a concept that is based on value judgments of ‘‘right” or ‘‘wrong” and ‘‘good” and ‘‘bad”. Three language-competent apes (two bonobos and a chimpanzee) are shown to use the symbols ‘‘good” and ‘‘bad” in appropriate contexts and to co-construct these values with the humans in their environment, indicating that the specific expression of value judgments is cultural. Their developmenta...
متن کاملAnalysis of Chimpanzee History Based on Genome Sequence Alignments
Population geneticists often study small numbers of carefully chosen loci, but it has become possible to obtain orders of magnitude for more data from overlaps of genome sequences. Here, we generate tens of millions of base pairs of multiple sequence alignments from combinations of three western chimpanzees, three central chimpanzees, an eastern chimpanzee, a bonobo, a human, an orangutan, and ...
